South Park's creators to make Mormon musical for Broadway

South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are cooking up a musical which will poke fun at Mormons.

The Broadway musical, which has the working title Mormon Musical, will be based on the unconventional lifestyles of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The Utah-based church was a key member of a religious coalition which formed to convince the Californian electorate to vote against legalising gay marriage recently.

Cheyenne Jackson, a gay actor who played in the September 11 film United 93, told the New York Post that he had accepted the lead role in the film.

He said: "It's hilarious: very acerbic and biting. It offends everybody, but does what South Park does best, which is [that] by the end it comes around and has something great to say."

He added: "I play the main missionary, Elder something."

Stone and Parker are well known for taking no prisoners with their cartoon, ridiculing everyone and everything from Saddam Hussein to Starbucks.

South Park, about a group of children growing up in a small Colorado town, put cable channel Comedy Central on the map with its satirical take on American life.

It is now in its twelfth year and Stone and Parker are contracted to produce episodes until 2011.

Parker told the LA Times on Tuesday: "We always said, when we feel like we don't want to write the show any more, ourselves, then it's time to end the show."

'South Park' Duo Hits 200th - And Broadway

It's milestone time for South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Below is a video taste of tomorrow night's 200th episode. They are set to make their Broadway debut in March on The Book Of Mormon, a stage musical. Parker and Stone wrote the book and music with Avenue Q’s Bobby Lopez and Parker will direct with Avenue Q’s Jason Moore. Scott Rudin is producing with Anne Garefino. The Broadway move comes as Comedy Central prepares to air the 200th episode of their irreverent comedy series.

The musical deals with two wide-eyed Mormon boys who go on a two-year mission to Third World countries and underprivileged communities, where they try to convert people to join the Mormon faith. After watching them lacerate scores of notable celebrity and faith--every star skewered in the 14 seasons of South Park appear in tomorrow's 200th episode--my instinct is to fear for the Mormom faithful. Insiders describe the musical as highly subversive and satiric, but with a generous spirit. The theater hasn’t yet been named, but financing is in place and the musical is fully formed after being run through three workshops.

The Book of Mormon was plagiarized from a novel by a guy named Spalding.

So should we all do a field trip to this thing? We could meet up somewhere and then go from there, for the opening. But let's drive. I don't fly. ... Then again, I don't drive either but I'll work that out.

Sure to offend and succeed
'Book of Mormon' slays 'em in tryout

Hilarious, audacious -- and guaranteed to offend just about everybody.

That's how theater insiders are describing "The Book of Mormon," the much-anticipated new Broadway musical from "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

Backers' auditions for the show, which will open in March at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, were held this past week, and I know of several insiders who are still sore from laughing so hard.

So tix allegedly go on sale Nov 19th with a special presale Nov 10th "for South Park fans".

Anyone going to try getting into the opening night party?

I'll sure as Abraham try!

Am I really the only one that got suckered into the presale tickets today???

March 23rd, nosebleed seats. Had to go with the cheapest possible just in case we DON'T get to NY on time. But yeah, I know, I got tickets during the "preview dates" so what exactly does that mean? It's still the whole show right???

SU-fuckin-perb!

Great interview clip and I love the trailer - especially ending with the ominous door bell sound......dum, dum, dumdum, DUUUUM.

Great that they used the door bell in the logo of the show too.

I remember a loooong, long time ago when Mormons used to visit Ireland, Dublin and sometimes our home. Funny, mostly boring, extremely polite, bizarre people.

I remember someone walking up to us one time while we were washing our car, I always thought it was a Mormon, but now I'm not so sure. And when we were all like "not interested, got our own religion, thanks" the dude said "well do you care that you're going to burn in hell?" ... And then my brother was like "GET OFF MY PROPERTY!!!!!"

But I'm not sure what the Mormon's approach is. I haven't had that many dealings with them.

However, I agree, I like the doorbell at the end of the teaser! ;p Sets the tone.

Hmm... I liked the interview, and the doorbell-touch in the trailer and logo but... It's a bit crappy to advertise the musical by just praising how great Matt and Trey are in general

But it's Matt and Trey's world. We just live in it.

What I'd like to know is, are there red carpet walks at Broadway plays? Not that I'm personally going opening night, but do they do things like that for plays?

'South Park' Creators' Mormon Musical Has Some Mormons Excited, Others Suspicious

No one has seen Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s musical comedy “The Book of Mormon” yet. It doesn’t start previews on Broadway until the end of February. But early chatter from the Mormon community is already divided between those eager to see the show, and a more conservative group who views the play as another instance of persecution against their faith.

John Dehlin, 41, of Logan, Utah has already purchased his tickets to the Broadway musical and will be flying to New York with a group of 10 people (only one of whom isn’t Mormon) on March 25th.

He says he can’t wait.

“I’m super excited,” Dehlin, the founder of Mormon Stories podcasts, told FOX411. “I think this is our Mormon moment. The Jews had ‘Fiddler [on the Roof] ‘and the Catholics had ‘Sound of Music’ and now we have this.”

Dehlin calls himself a liberal member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members are collectively referred to as Mormons. He says he knows many LDS members who are nervous about the upcoming show which features a book, music and lyrics written by “South Park” creators Parker and Stone and “Avenue Q” composer and co-creator Robert Lopez.

“When a lot of my orthodox LDS friends hear that 'South Park' is doing a musical about Mormonism they put their hands to their head and give a deep sigh and express sadness or frustration,” Dehlin said. "But my liberal friends are stoked!"

Brigham Young professor Daniel Peterson began his thoughts on the play with an audible sigh.

“The general reaction is ‘sigh’, ‘more of this’,” Peterson, who teaches Islamic Studies and Arabic at the Mormon University in Utah told FOX411. “We’re sort of accustomed to being made to look like idiots or villains so it is nothing new. You wouldn’t do this to Jews, you wouldn’t do this to blacks, but we’re still legit to kick around.”

Peterson isn’t a champion of the Parker and Stone project and won’t be flying to New York to see a performance, but he agrees with Dehlin that this could be a “Mormon moment.”
“The fact is we are a blip on the national radar screen, and there is something to be said for that,” Peterson said. “My feeling is it is better from our standpoint to be talked about than utterly ignored. I would rather be mocked because it gives me a chance to explain myself.”

Still, other LDS members have harsher words for the musical. Ezra Taylor a contributor for the website LDS Liberty, has no interest in seeing a play he believes will mock his faith.

“From the material on their official websites it looks like the typical sophomoric human stuck on tearing down instead of lifting up,” Taylor told FOX411. “Its vulgarity will be unappealing to anyone with a sense of self worth.”

Parker and Stone had no comment for this story, but they recently told Vogue magazine that they mean Mormons no harm.

“We love musicals, and we love Mormons,” Parker said. “I think if any Mormons come and stay all the way through, they’ll end up liking the show. I mean, it rips on them a lot, but in the end their spirit of wanting to help wins the day.”

The plot of the musical focuses on two mismatched Mormon missionaries who are sent to Africa and learn the hard way that the world is a very different place outside of Utah.

Kim Farah, a spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, took a diplomatic approach when asked the Church’s official stance on the show.

“The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but The Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change peoples’ lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ,” Farah said.

Still, some Mormons are just hoping the show will make them laugh.

When he first heard about the production, Loyd Erickson, a Mormon and graduate student living in Claremont, CA, knew that it would get some of his conservative friends riled up enough to call for a boycott of the show. So he created a satirical Facebook group called “Mormons Against Broadway - because of its obvious support of anti-Mormonism.”

“The reason I made it is that whenever there is some kind of perceived anti-Mormonism there is almost always an immediate response by Mormons urging a boycott. There was an immediate call to arms against ‘Big Love’ so when news broke out about this musical I created this page as a satire,” Erickson said. The group now has 86 members.

Erickson added that he believes “South Park” has actually shown a sense of respect for Mormons in the past when they have made light of the faith. He is hoping that the Broadway show is a success and makes its way out West so that he can see it on his student budget.

Joanna Brooks, who grew up in a conservative Mormon home, agrees that Parker and Stone seem to have a soft spot for her faith, despite their penchant for lampooning it. Brooks, who lives in San Francisco and writes for the online magazine Religion Dispatches, is also hoping for a production to make it to the West Coast.

“What we will see on Broadway will be something challenging and irreverent, but also riveting, entertaining and ultimately loving,” Brooks said. “Frankly, when Mormons are able to laugh at ourselves is when we will ultimately be a mature world religion.”
willowrose
Hm. If they're into explaining things why don't they try explaining the movie September Dawn a little more. (Aside from the whole fake love story crap)

So the Book of Mormon Broadway play is going to be riveting, entertaining and ultimately loving? :/ I really hope that results in the two elder boys humping each other.

'Book of Mormon' Creators 'Not Worried' About Offending Mormons

In the same vein as 'South Park' and 'Team America,' Trey Parker and Matt Stone are ready to tackle Broadway (and Mormonism) in their new musical 'The Book of Mormon.' Yes, it will likely offend devout religious groups, but the creators aren't worried.

"I like every Mormon I've ever met. They're just so damn nice," Stone admitted to PopEater at a special preview in New York City Monday evening.

"We aren't as worried about Mormons. It's the critics," Parker added.

The live-action musical centers on two 19-year-old Mormon missionaries -- with polar opposite personalities -- who are sent to Uganda, Africa, for their two-year mission. The pair quickly learn it is a far cry from Salt Lake City when the locals welcome them in a song titled 'Has-A-Diga-Eee-Bo-Eye,' which in English translates to 'F**k the Gods.' The characters come face to face with world issues like malaria, aids and poverty, which challenges their religious beliefs and begs the overarching message, "If there is a God, why do places like this exist?"

Parker and Stone have already devoted an entire episode of 'South Park' to Joseph Smith and Mormonism, but the duo's fascination with the region keeps them coming back for more. Although they have been working on 'The Book of Mormon' (aka "God's favorite musical") for more than six years, they've been talking about making a Mormon show since they were in college.

"In terms of Mormonism, we are all just fascinated by it," said Parker, who coins himself "an atheist who admires religion." "It's such a new religion. We never came at this as 'Hey, let's do some Mormon bashing.' I like every Mormon I've ever met."

While the pair remains optimistic about the impending controversy, it's still up for debate that every Mormon will embrace the tongue-in-cheek satire.

So Trey is an atheist now?
willowrose
^ I noticed that too. They go from agnostic to atheist.

I'm really hoping my faith is going to be restored in MnT with this play because right now it seems like they're kissing Mormon butt a little too much in these interviews. I understand the musical isn't about direct Mormon bashing, but they really shouldn't have to try defending themselves so much with all this "but we really do love Mormons and we think they're really going to like it and they're such super serial nice people!" crap. Yes, Trey likes Mormons. But stop trying to kiss their butts dude.

I once had a Mormon come to my door telling me if I don't read the book that's in their hand then I'm going to hell. ... That wasn't exactly THAT nice.
nobby
I looked into getting seats for the preview period (which is usually cheaper on Broadway because they're still working out the kinks). Well, I checked it out and it would cost my husband and I between $400 and $500 dollars to go (orchestra seats--any thing else in that particular theater is a waste of time and quite uncomfortable). I don't think M&T's fan base can afford it. I can't. That's an awful lot of money.
willowrose
^ :/ Well that sucks to know! I bought the cheap nose bleed seats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nobby
Well, if they're not sold out, they may have cheap tickets at the TKS booth. I'm local, so it's just a waste of tolls and a half hour drive if there are no tickets available.
willowrose
That's a good point. I'm gonna check and see if I can upgrade with a good deal while I'm there! I'll just give away the seats I bought if I can do that (get better ones. But I won't set my heart on it)
willowrose
Broadway.com put up another good vid with the guys talking about "what to expect". I like the "people are gonna be watching it like this... like their grandmother" comment that co-director Casey Nicholaw says. ;p That's exactly how I feel I'm gonna be sitting there watching the show. Not ME, but watching those I'm bringing with me react that way. :/ But it puts my mind at ease a little bit, knowing I'm not the only one having to suffer the wrath of "We've sinned!!!! (by watching that!)" .. I'm taking fellow South Park fans with me, but one of them is my MOM. She loves South Park but she's also holier up the butt. So, we'll if I get left behind in NY or not.

The vid is good. I'm sure mostly everyone has seen it on their fb by now but if not, check it out here

This makes me sad. There is no way I'm going to be ble to afford a ticket to this. sad.gif

Doesn't Trey usually claim athiest? I believe Matt is the one I have seen a lot of agnostic quotes from. I find you get a good number of agnostics with mixed-religion parents.

I don't know. But affording a ticket is actually the easy part, it's getting there that throws some hassles in. :/ And I'm even more screwed 'cause I already have a ticket but I was also called for stinkin' jury duty for the first darn time ever for March 7th. If I get stuck doing it and it drags on until the end of the month, ... I don't want to actually write it out but lets just say I will NOT be a happy jury camper.

But anyway I've seen agnostic quotes from both of them more than anything it seems. But then again that might have been only a couple times. I actually always thought the opposite. It seemed to me Matt was more "the atheist" and Trey was more the "hm, not really sure yet" one. Until now. 'Cause now Trey is evidently stating he's atheist and Matt is still just agnostic. ;p ... I love them. They stay true to who they are while still mixing it up a little. ;p
Jessie
Yeah, I would trust your knowledge of the subject more than mine. I'm a bad T&M fan. Don't know shit about them.
Anamaria
Matt always said he was agnostic. But Trey said in some interview that he does believe in some God, just that he has his own idea about God, or something like that. This is why I am surprised that now he said he is an atheist.
Jessie
I'm not surprised by Trey's changes in belief when it comes to religion. According to most of what I have seen, he is a very confused man. wink.gif

Not talking smack or anything. Most people I know are confused.
willowrose
From what I've always seen, when someone asks "do you believe in God?" Matt's always the one that goes "erm, well,.." and then Trey will say "I believe in SOMETHING, just not sure what exactly" and then Matt goes "Yeah, me too".. Those weren't their exact words but that's the way I've always seen it.

I suppose that would lean more toward agnostic on Matt's behalf, so yeah, I'll have to agree.
