"THE COON"
IN AN ALL-NEW "SOUTH PARK" ON
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18 AT 10:00 P.M. ON COMEDY CENTRAL

NEW YORK, March 16, 2009 – One young citizen takes it upon himself to maintain order during a time of despair in South Park. An all-new episode of "South Park" titled, "Who Is The Coon?,” premiers on Wednesday, March 18 at 10:00 p.m. on COMEDY CENTRAL.

“The Coon” rises from the trash and takes his place as a lone vigilante who wipes out crime in the town of South Park. A rival superhero appears on the scene in the form of “Mysterion” and challenges the Coon’s place as a “symbol” for the town.

Heh, superheroes.

This seems... confusing. No idea what this will be about. Watchmen?
Will
I think maybe The Dark Knight, since one of these boys will be dressed in black, wear a utility belt, and wear a cloak. Batman comes to mind when it comes to utility belts.

I'm ready to get cooned, son.

I hope it'll be something that works even if you haven't seen any movies and even if you don't know anything about what's going on... biggrin.gif That's me!

Loved it. That episode pretty much sums up what it's like to be a 10 year old boy. And that's bogus they never showed Mysterion's real identity. I was thinking Stan. Not as funny as the finale of season 12, or the premiere of 13, but I still enjoyed it.

"Sir, I've got a shot at Chaos!"
"You think your bullets can hurt him?!"
Brennan
Hey, not bad. Loved the new lighting/shots they had to come up with since it was a parody of super-shadowy super hero movies. Fun episode!!!!
Misty
Loved it! I agree on the lighting Bren, I enjoyed this episode. And I am glad we don't really know who it was, but I was thinking Wendy with her little comment about, how do you know it's guy?

My Papa was a little racist and I think he has actually said a line from the show before... "Get the Coon a Sprite"

I watched with Mrs. Killa and she had not seen the Leprechaun video either.

Oh and for a few minutes my initials were all over the scene. lol Loved it!

The professor is back!

and with so many great lines!

...all those times you tricked me into meeting you, and then ga..and then gave me titty twisters

Thought it was funny....knew it was going to be like Dark Knight!

gave it a 7/10 but that's just after the first watch...loved how they made the coon disappear like batman haha.

and when the coon saw professor chaos and says "chaos i need to keep on my toes" found that funny for some reason.

will give it another watch soon Im just happy they did a dark Knight episode.
rinygrin
The Coon and Mysterion both utilize inner monologues to narrate their story, using the same style of speech as Rorschach.

Cultural references

I also liked that Wendy comment, reminded me of Sailor Starlights.
I know when I was younger I would have loved to be a superhero, obviously something like Sailor Moon mixed with Batman. chodaboy.gif
Will
And The Spirit, from what I've read elsewhere.

Good episode. Glad to see Professor Chaos and General Disarray back. biggrin.gif

*SPOILERS!* Review of "The Coon"

QUOTE
Your regularly scheduled South Park duo are busy covering some silly little music festival in Austin tonight, so while Josh and Sean are off eating tacos and being total hipster douchebags, I’m stepping in to ask the question that’s been plaguing all of us for the past 23 minutes or so: Who is Mysterion. Or, uh, the Coon. Or whatever.

Tonight’s episode turned out to be another one of South Park’s signature “fuck you, audience” episodes, but not before it turned in a solid half-hour of superhero parody. “The Coon” used Watchmen, The Dark Knight, and a couple of other comic-book blockbusters to frame a pretty standard Cartman story: After discovering that no one is interested in the superhero identity he’s fashioned for himself—a masked raccoon character who punishes would-be “rapists” with some mildly vexing face-scratching—our favorite fatass sets out to find and destroy the guy who aped his shtick, some butt-pirate in underpants who calls himself Mysterion.

The setup was pretty tame, both in terms of target (ooh, a superhero parody, don’t hurt yourselves, guys) and Cartmen’s antics—though I guess he can’t always be killing his enemies’ parents and inciting genocide. Not that those are necessarily negatives: The specter of big, satirical bogeymen (Scientology, Family Guy, whatever) on South Park can get tiresome, and I’ve always preferred the low-stakes assholery of Cartmen to his more malicious escapades. (Sure, he was about to blow up a hospital, a la The Joker, but since he never actually got the detonators from ACE Hardware, I’m choosing to chalk that one up as an empty threat.)

Personally, I think one of the funniest gags on South Park is Frustrated Cartmen, so I got a kick out of his continually foiled efforts to become “the symbol this town needs,” from his über-fail of a convention (which led to a fun callback to the Ginger Kids and AIDS episodes) to his frustrated “I got boned, that’s what I did mom!” That it led to him eventually teaming up with Chaos and General Disarray in a plot to force Mysterion out from behind his (her?) mask, culminating in an epic slap fight high above the city, was a nice bit of icing on the cake.

I’m glad “The Coon” didn’t turn out to be a full-blown Watchmen parody, as it initially seemed (that opening shot…). That would have opened the doors for all sorts of sermonizing, rather than the fun character-based story we got tonight. Instead, the incorporation of The Dark Knight, The Spirit, and Spider-Man 3 (Am I missing other references? I’m sure I am.) led to a lot of funny, if maybe a tad obvious gags, my favorite of which was the gravel-voiced showdown between the Rorschach-y Coon and the Batman-ish Mysterion. (The self-important voiceover was a hoot, especially when it switched over to Mysterion in the second act.) Plus, it let the animators have fun with some really cool shots that were obviously lifted directly from those films.

Then there’s that ending. I suppose I should have seen it coming, but I’ll admit was duped into thinking Mysterion’s identity would indeed be revealed. Well, it was revealed, just not to us. It’s really not important who it is—knowing wouldn’t really add another layer to that character, which was pretty much just a one-dimensional excuse to make Carmen angry. But I’ve never been a fan of South Park’s “aren’t we clever” non-reveals—though I’m sure many of you will have the exact opposite reaction—so this was just a sad trombone of an ending to an otherwise really likable episode.

Grade: B+

Stray observations:

• Another great gag: Chaos’ Mysterion suspects wall panning over to his puny Coon suspects wall, consisting of only Bruce Vilanch and Harvey Fierstein. The kicker, during the rooftop battle later on: “Isn’t that Bruce Vilanch?”

• Maybe I’m missing something, but what was the point of Mysterion visiting Kyle, beyond showing us that he wasn’t Kyle? Mysterion enlisting him to help do “background checks” didn’t actually lead to anything, did it? Ugh, cartoons are hard.

• “I hate the world and all its puny inhabitants and all that, but blowing up a hospital, it just seems mean.”

• OMG, did Mysterion just die? No, he just fell into a pile of burlap sacks. Phew.

Joker blew up a hospital... That was kind of a half slap, half pat on the back kind of review.

Can't believe everyone else loved this episode. I thought it was lame and not funny at all. This will go right on the list of episodes I will probably never bother to watch again, together with the Vampire-show.
exparrot
Ha, that review is by Genevieve Koski from the AV Club. Aka my favorite website of all time. God I'm such a hipster douche bag.

I like this episode too. Not as much as last week's, but pretty close. Professor Chaos is always so darn cute.

I only liked it cos Cartman was in it all the time biggrin.gif

Anna, do you watch SP by yourself, or with a friend? I noticed that all the South Parks I watch by myself, I really don't laugh at very much. But I watch em with friends while high, and that makes it an overall more enjoyable experience. This episode was a fun little rip on Batman. I'm surprised there wasn't a Joker parody.

And I think you're missing out on the coolness of seeing South Park presented like a big budget Hollywood superhero movie. Maybe that doesn't impress you too much, but I totally appreciate it based on where SP came from to start with. Adding dramatic shadows to standard SP scenes is funny and very creative in my opinion. I pick apart movies the exact same way Matt and Trey do though. So I can relate to these movie parodies they do all the time. But to someone who doesn't really care about that, I could see how it might not be that funny.

Yeah, no Joker =P Maybe they didn't feel like they could do the character justice so close to the actors death.

Personally, I don't go into every episode expecting a comedy show. Sometimes shows are drama and action too. So I guess I look at it as do I like it or not, as opposed to whether or not I laughed front to back.

And the scenery (presentation) is just as important to me. In fact, set design was at the top for me on another show, Pushing Daisies, that I was watching. You can go to CBS.com and check out a few episodes. The clothing design in that show was phenomenal, you should go check it out, Tuhinal, I think you would enjoy it just for the retro clothing. But set design is so vibrant and colorful and such witty banter. I still can't believe they canceled it. sp-cartmanangry.gif Go check it out, you never know, maybe it will give you another way of looking at other shows and possibly get you to find other ways to enjoy the SP eps on your do not resuscitate list.

I tend to watch them alone but I don't think it affects my opinions on the shows. Even when I am watching South Park with friends I like the same shows most that I did before. Actually, watching them with a friend even makes me enjoy them less since I'm kinda watching my friend's reactions and stuff instead of being able to fully get into it myself. I prefer watching them by myself at first, maybe then with friends (Misty, I still want to join you guys to see it the week I'm in LA).

I can see the humor or the irony in using that cliché Hollywood movie dramatic stuff on an animated show like South Park but it doesn't really amuse me unless it's done really well and in a clever way (like in Team America) and unless the story is actually good. I didn't think it was done well this time, or at least it wasn't enough to make the episode good. I found that there was hardly any story or any depth in this one.
poopstain
Well, for me it was not Cartman that made the ep funny- the coon was not a very fun character. Neither was mysterion. The Coon trike at the end was def. pretty kewl though, as was the scratching scene at the beginning.....Also Cartman seems to be maturing a bit in his language, which can also be funny, I guess the juxtaposition of waning innocence and the waxing f bomb.... It was totally Professor Chaos and General Disarray that made it enjoyable for me, and brought the other characters along. I never saw batman or superman or any of the other movies parodied. Basically if Professor Chaos wasn't in it, for me it would probably have sucked more. Also maybe english as second or third language loses some hilarity too with them hella zingers.

Matt and Trey raped this video to bring you last night's ep:

Love it when there are unexpected references in episodes: St. Patrick's Day was two days ago. smile.gif
southparkpike
haha. Whenever I see one, I think of the other as well. If somebody somehow missed Bub Rubb and Lil Sis....

So far, this season is kicking arse~!!! Keep the good times coming. Hearing Matt pronouce "vigilantism" the way he did made the ep for me, personally. And the shot of The Coon looking "mysterious" at Coonicon. And the pimp from gimme da gold. You know what I'm sayin?
Killa
I thought it was great and much better than last weeks episode, which I happened to think was O.K.. But, I'm a big Super Hero geek and love any episode that follows Cartman. Go Figure.

Best line of the episode: "...(gasp)...Fucking Bitch" -Cartman reacting to Wendy questioning him on Mysterion's gender.

How about elsewhere in the movie? I have an e-mail suggesting that Clyde is Mysterion because either Bruce Wayne or Batman was asleep during a scene in The Dark Knight.

Yeah, but isn't Clyde frequently asleep in class? I seem to remember him being kind of a snoozer in a few episodes. Maybe we'll find out who Mysterion is on the dvd commentary.

So if you're drunk you're not allowed to post anywhere else than in Random Thread or your own blog? huh.gif That sounds a bit controlling.

I think Clyde doesn't appear to be smart enough to be Mysterion.

I haven't seen this episode yet but a friend of mine swears he saw this episode on Paramount Comedy UK last Friday. If he's correct it means that PC-UK are no longer waiting months to show new episodes after they've aired in the US - which in turn is brilliant! I looked up PC-UK's website which is a shitty site to begin with but it has practically no info on schedules of what SP eps are airing so I'll have to wait and see this Friday...!
