South Park's creators to make Mormon musical for Broadway

South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are cooking up a musical which will poke fun at Mormons.

The Broadway musical, which has the working title Mormon Musical, will be based on the unconventional lifestyles of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The Utah-based church was a key member of a religious coalition which formed to convince the Californian electorate to vote against legalising gay marriage recently.

Cheyenne Jackson, a gay actor who played in the September 11 film United 93, told the New York Post that he had accepted the lead role in the film.

He said: "It's hilarious: very acerbic and biting. It offends everybody, but does what South Park does best, which is [that] by the end it comes around and has something great to say."

He added: "I play the main missionary, Elder something."

Stone and Parker are well known for taking no prisoners with their cartoon, ridiculing everyone and everything from Saddam Hussein to Starbucks.

South Park, about a group of children growing up in a small Colorado town, put cable channel Comedy Central on the map with its satirical take on American life.

It is now in its twelfth year and Stone and Parker are contracted to produce episodes until 2011.

Parker told the LA Times on Tuesday: "We always said, when we feel like we don't want to write the show any more, ourselves, then it's time to end the show."

From what I've always seen, when someone asks "do you believe in God?" Matt's always the one that goes "erm, well,.." and then Trey will say "I believe in SOMETHING, just not sure what exactly" and then Matt goes "Yeah, me too".. Those weren't their exact words but that's the way I've always seen it.

I suppose that would lean more toward agnostic on Matt's behalf, so yeah, I'll have to agree.
