U2 will be shortly releasing their new album - or they may already have I'm trying got keep my head in the sand regarding this. No doubt it will sell in it's millions.

Thank (insert deity name of your choice here) they will cos one of their 15 operating and investing companies, Not Us Ltd, reported a €3m plus ($3.8m) loss (!) in 2007. Poor them. Being worth about €900m is tough, eh?

Yesterday, a protest was held in Dublin against U2's decision to move their business interests out of Ireland - in order to save them a bit on their tax bill.

Protest at U2 tax residency status

A protest against U2's decision to move some of its tax affairs to the Netherlands is to be held outside the Department of Finance today.

The protest is being organised by the Debt and Development Coalition Ireland (DDCI) which campaigns on issues related to the developing world. The coalition contains such organisations as Concern Worldwide, Trócaire, Oxfam and various Catholic missionary orders.

DDCI co-ordinator Nessa ní Chasaíde said Bono, in particular, was guilty of “double standards” because of his public calls for rich countries to increase development aid . She said the protest would highlight the fact that U2’s tax avoidance deprives the exchequer of revenue that could be spent on development aid.

Today the Irish Times ran an interview with Bono and The Egde and Bono had this to say....

Bono 'hurt' by criticism

2 SINGER Bono says he was “stung” and “hurt” by criticism of the band moving part of its business to the Netherlands to lessen its tax burden.

In an interview in The Ticket today, he speaks about the band’s 2006 decision to move part of its business out of Ireland following the Government’s decision to put a cap on the amount of tax-free earnings available to artists.

U2’s move was criticised by politicians and some development groups. “We pay millions and millions of dollars in tax. The thing that stung us [about the criticism] was the accusation of hypocrisy for my work as an activist,” the singer says

Objectivity isn't Bono's strong point, bless. And he seems to be somewhat confused about the currency used here in Ireland - it is, in fact, the Euro.

Bono baiting is getting to be quite the norm these days. Quelle bore. I may have to retire my 'Bono, you're the biggest douche, nay arsehole, in the universe' commenting.

Even a Conservative Member of Parliament in Britain raised a 'Bono baiting' type question in the Commons the other day. The BBC are literally giving U2 free publicity - BBC accused of giving U2 too much publicity
