South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that they plan to adapt their Broadway hit The Book of Mormon for the big screen.

“Hopefully it will have a big run and a big tour and then we can do the movie in several years,” says Parker, who penned the musical with Stone and Avenue Q co-writer Robert Lopez.

“We want to do it some day,” says Stone. “The great thing is, a lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey’s a director and Scott [Rudin]’s a great producer. We’ve all made movies. So it’s kind of cool, it can stay in the same family.”

Exclusive Interview with Anne Garefino

"When consulting the list of longest-running series in the history of television, these award-winning programs made the grade: Reading Rainbow, Lassie, The Daily Show, Masterpiece Theatre, Saturday Night Live, NBC Nightly News, and… South Park.

"In 1997, two friends came up with an idea they thought was a long shot, 15 years later the creators of South Park celebrate 2011 as “The Year of the Fan.” Fans of the long-running series will get to enjoy new merchandise, a traveling art exhibit, a 15,000 square foot world of “South Park” located just outside this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, and a documentary on the behind-the-scenes making of the show, due out later this fall.

"With a decade-and-a-half of delivering viewers comedic gold on Comedy Central, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with their executive producer Anne Garefino, also have the hottest ticket on Broadway right now with a little show you might have heard of, The Book of Mormon.

"On her first day off in years (seriously, years), the woman behind South Park allowed me the distinct honor of asking her a bunch of questions about her career, those two guys she works with daily, and basically what life is like when you produce a hit Broadway musical and well, f&^$ing South Park."

Celebrating ‘South Park’ by Bringing It to Life

-Comedy Central, which has been presenting “South Park” since August 1997, is teaming up with the Frito-Lay division of PepsiCo to produce 1.5 million packages of Cheesy Poofs to be sold in Wal-Mart stores beginning next month.

-An exhibit, called the Ultimate “South Park” Fan Experience, will be sponsored by Comedy Central in conjunction with Comic-Con International in San Diego July 21 to 24. The real version of the imaginary snack will be available at a replica of the school cafeteria from “South Park,” which will be near a replica of South Park Avenue, another major feature of the make-believe South Park, Colo. The exhibit, running 15,000 square feet, will also offer artwork, memorabilia, photo and tattoo booths, trivia contests and a station to create “South Park” avatars that can be uploaded to profile pages in social media like Facebook.

-There will also be an hourlong documentary about “South Park” in the fall, on Comedy Central and other networks.

-Michele Ganeless, president of Comedy Central in New York, says that South Park is renewed for a 17th season through 2013.

Book of Mormon tickets break Broadway records

"Hours after The Book of Mormon walked off with nine Tony Awards including best musical, Broadway's biggest new hit set a record with a top ticket price of $487.25."

"In the wake of its Tony juggernaut on Sunday, virtually all available seats for the rest of the year were sold, according to a check of Telecharge. That suggests an advance sale of at least $30 million."

"Prices are much higher in the so-called secondary market—“scalpers” in another era. On Ebay Inc.'s StubHub, a pair of orchestra seats for Saturday night is going for $1,832.75"

Tony Awards: Back stage with 'Book of Mormon' winners

June 14, 2011 | "When you die and you find out that God is a Mormon, what will you say to get off the hook?" I asked the creators of "Book of Mormon" moments after the musical swept the Tony Awards.

"Look at the box office," Trey Parker replied. "Scoreboard!"

Parker suddenly got serious and didn't have a snarky reply when he was informed that he had just tied a Tony record set by Josh Logan, who bagged four awards in one year for the original production of "South Pacific" (1950). Parker's four wins: best book, score, director and musical.

"We riffed on people getting awards enough that we have to walk that line carefully," said Trey Parker, grinning.

When he was asked, "Will there be a 'South Park' episode making fun of 'Book of Mormon'?" he replied, "No, because that wouldn't be cool."

Tony glory propels "Mormon" to No. 3 on album chart

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Adele returned to the top spot on the U.S. pop album for a 10th nonconsecutive week on Wednesday, bumping Lady Gaga to No. 2 after a two-week reign.

But the real news was the stunning re-entry at No. 3 of the original Broadway cast recording of "The Book of Mormon" on the heels of the show's nine Tony Award wins on Sunday.

It is the highest-charting Broadway cast album -- and first top 10 -- since 1969, when "Hair" spent 13 weeks at No. 1.

And, with sales of 61,000 units, "Mormon" claims the largest sales week for any cast album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The previous best week for a cast set belonged to the original London cast recording of "Phantom of the Opera" (Highlights), which sold 54,000 copies during the Christmas week of 1992.

"The Book of Mormon" debuted at No. 31 on the Billboard 200 three weeks ago after selling 13,000 copies as a digital download, fell to No. 124 the following week and then dropped off the chart. The CD came out last Tuesday, just in time to capitalize on its Tony Awards momentum: It went into the June 12 ceremony with a leading 14 nominations.

Sales were doubtless spurred on by AmazonMP3's multi-day sale-pricing of the digital album. The retailer offered it at just $1.99 for three days during the sales tracking week that ended on Sunday night.

The show -- with music and lyrics by "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and "Avenue Q" co-writer Robert Lopez -- opened March 24 at the Eugene O'Neill Theater. Ads touting the cast album have been running during airings of "South Park" on Comedy Central, while Parker and Stone have chatted up the show on everything from NBC's "Today" to "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart." The nine Tony wins for "Mormon" included best musical, direction, featured actress (Nikki M. James) and score.

"A week after they leave New York around March 28, the pair hurtles into the 15th season of South Park, part of a new pact with Comedy Central that keeps the show on the air through 2013 and is said to be even richer than their previous $75 million deal."

Cepstral TTS Technology Adds a New Voice to South Park

November 22, 2010

Cepstral LLC, a global leader in premium-quality Text-To-Speech (TTS) technology based in Pittsburgh, provided its distinctive “David” voice for the 2010 season finale of Comedy Central Network’s award-winning animation, South Park.

The 30-minute episode first aired Wednesday, November 17 at 10 EST and is now also available on southparkstudios.com. In the episode a piece of voice-assisted exercise equipment being excessively used by “Sharon Marsh,” mother of key character “Stan,” strongly prompted Sharon – in David’s natural-sounding voice – to exercise even faster and harder.

“South Park’s executive producer chose us because we were able to meet her extremely tight deadlines. Our ability to respond so rapidly was a direct result of Cepstral’s proven history of licensing voice software for numerous applications within movies, TV shows and other media,” states Patrick Dexter, Cepstral’s Director Business Development. “Trey Parker, the show’s co-creator, actually made the ‘David’voice selection himself from our vast library of 50 voices.”

'South Park' Sued for Stealing from YouTube

Less than a month after South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker were forced to apologize for lifting material for a spoof of Inception from the website CollegeHumor, the show is again facing accusations of content theft.

The producers of the animated hit, including Viacom and Comedy Central, are being sued for allegedly ripping off a copyrighted music video for the viral phenomenon What What (In the Butt).

The video was produced by Brownmark Films based on a song by Samwell. Released in 2007, it became a massive hit and was featured on PerezHilton.com and VH1's Best Week Ever, and has been downloaded over 33 million times on YouTube. According to the site, it's one of the most watched music videos of all time.

I thought the Mint-Berry Crunch ending was sweet ... All along, Mint-Berry was made fun of, but in the end his super-powers saved the day. I thought it was cute, even if a let down for Kenny.

I laughed a few times (Justin Bieber was hilarious) and the comic book super-hero story was entertaining.

Bradley is very similar to Butters. Mint-Berry Crunch could have been Butters, but the ending would have ruined Butters so maybe that's why they made Bradley Mint-Berry Crunch instead. :sp-mbc:

A Paris fashion designer heads on down to South Park.

"For the second season of his JC/DC line, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac chose the characters of South Park to be the music icons of his collection 'Holly boys and naughty girls'."

"I discovered South Park and Nirvana at the same time; I would mute my TV to play “Smells Like Teen Spirit” loudly. The fusion of the two made perfect sense for me! My JC/DC line is about rock and roll; and South Park with its characters, its colourful range, its brutality and its noisy drawing seemed to encapsulate the world I wanted to portray." -Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.

Sure to offend and succeed
'Book of Mormon' slays 'em in tryout

Hilarious, audacious -- and guaranteed to offend just about everybody.

That's how theater insiders are describing "The Book of Mormon," the much-anticipated new Broadway musical from "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

Backers' auditions for the show, which will open in March at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, were held this past week, and I know of several insiders who are still sore from laughing so hard.

'South Park' Duo Hits 200th - And Broadway

It's milestone time for South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Below is a video taste of tomorrow night's 200th episode. They are set to make their Broadway debut in March on The Book Of Mormon, a stage musical. Parker and Stone wrote the book and music with Avenue Q’s Bobby Lopez and Parker will direct with Avenue Q’s Jason Moore. Scott Rudin is producing with Anne Garefino. The Broadway move comes as Comedy Central prepares to air the 200th episode of their irreverent comedy series.

The musical deals with two wide-eyed Mormon boys who go on a two-year mission to Third World countries and underprivileged communities, where they try to convert people to join the Mormon faith. After watching them lacerate scores of notable celebrity and faith--every star skewered in the 14 seasons of South Park appear in tomorrow's 200th episode--my instinct is to fear for the Mormom faithful. Insiders describe the musical as highly subversive and satiric, but with a generous spirit. The theater hasn’t yet been named, but financing is in place and the musical is fully formed after being run through three workshops.

South Park's Matt Stone

Trey Parker and Matt Stone laid the foundations for an animated empire with "The Spirit of Christmas", an incredibly crude animated short they made with pieces of cut-out construction paper in 1995. Out of that came the Comedy Central show "South Park", which debuted in 1997 and which is now the longest-running and highest-rated show in the history of Comedy Central. Even more remarkable than the show's ratings success has been its durability; in 14 seasons, it's never fallen off.

A huge part of the show's success has always been the music. Parker and Stone have written insane numbers of songs for "South Park", and their songs almost always achieve three very difficult things: They're consistently crudely and absurdly funny, they're almost always catchy enough to get stuck in your head, and they always move the plots of their episodes forward. Pitchfork recently spoke with Stone about his favorite musical moments in the show's history, as well as what it was like to work with Radiohead, Isaac Hayes, and Primus.
